Durabond Professional Rapid Set Adhesive is a rapid setting quick drying, cement-based adhesive for fixing ceramic and natural stone tiles and in interior and exterior situations. Tiles and mosaics fixed with Durabond Professional Rapid Set can be grouted and subjected to traffic 4 hours after fixing at normal temperatures. This adhesive conforms to the requirements of BS 5980 as a Type 1, Class AA adhesive and DIN 18 156-M (adhesive with early strength), and EN 12004 norms.
PREPARATION
The substrate being adhered to must be clean, free from dust, dirt, grease, oil and any other contaminants and must be adequately stable to support the weight of materials being fixed. Durabond Professional Rapid Set can be applied to cement/sand, concrete etc, but moisture sensitive materials must be dry and remain dry after fixing. Gypsum plaster surfaces must be thoroughly dry and the primed with Durabond Primer diluted 1 part to 3 parts water. When fixing to very smooth, dense and impervious surfaces, such as existing ceramic tiles (glazed or unglazed), glazed bricks, terrazzo etc. Durabond Mortar Admix should be incorporated in the Durabond Professional Rapid Set.
MIXING INSTRUCTIONS
Add Durabond Professional Rapid Set to water in a clean bucket. Stir and mix thoroughly to give a consistent, slump free and easily trowelled mortar. Mixing proportions are as follows:
- 4 parts Durabond Professional Rapid Set: 1 part water. A 20kg bag requires approximately 5.2 litres of water.
- The mortar is immediately ready for use and has a working time of approximately 30 minutes at a temperature of 20ºC
- Open time is approximately 15 minutes.
FIXING INSTRUCTIONS
The mortar should be applied to the surface and then combed through with a suitably notched trowel to give a ribbed adhesive bed. Use a 3mm x 3mm-notched trowel for mosaics and thin flat backed wall tiling, a 5mm x 5mm-notched trowel for normal wall tiling and an 8mm x 8mm-notched trowel for normal floor tiling. Bed the tiles firmly whilst the adhesive is moist and soft. Deep-keyed floor tiles should be buttered to ensure solid bedding. Once the adhesive is applied immediately after mixing, the open time is approximately 15 minutes but this time will be greatly reduced if the mixed adhesive is left longer before applying. Any rough or uneven surfaces should be pre-levelled.
GROUTING INSTRUCTIONS
Grouting may commence once the tile bed is sufficiently firm, usually 4 hours after fixing at 20ºC
COVERAGE
When fixing with a notched trowel 1.5 to 2.4kg per m² depending on the surfaces being bonded and notch pattern used. When fixing deep-keyed tiles etc, additional material may be required for buttering the back profile.
STORAGE CONDITIONS
Durabond Professional Rapid Set has a shelf life of 12 months once stored in clean dry conditions away from extremes of temperature.
