Identification
A thin bed, acrylic based wall adhesive which fixes mosaics and ceramic tiles without slipping, but allows for adjustment whilst fixing. In most cases this enables tiles to be fixed from top or bottom without the need for battens.
The product is also designed for the fixing of polystyrene ceiling tiles and coving. It is suitable in domestic shower walls, bathrooms, toilets and kitchens, provided the area is grouted in accordance with these recommendations.
Note: Not suitable for shower floors, industrial showers, swimming pools and areas subject to standing water. Use Durabond Rapid Set Adhesive. Where shower trays are used, seal tray to wall using a proprietary silicone based sealing material such as Durabond Silicone Adhesive/Sealant.
Substrates
Provided the recommended preparation has been undertaken, tiles can be fixed to most types of interior surfaces including cement renderings, plaster, plywood, hardwood, plasterboard, blockboard, asbestos-cement sheets, old glazed bricks and tiles, sound painted surfaces, rendered breeze blocks and rendered lightweight concrete blocks.
Standards
Durabond Mastergrip Gold non-slip Ceramic Wall Tile Adhesive conforms to B S 5385: Part 1: 1976 (Code of Practice for Wall Tiling) and to B S 5980:1980 as a type 2 class B adhesive)
PREPARATION OF SURFACES
General
Ensure surface is in sound condition, flat and dry, it must be free from oil, grease, dirt, dust and other such contamination.
Plasterwork
In the case of plastered surfaces, decaying or loose areas must be replaced and any inherent dampness in plastered walls renders it unsuitable for tiling. Allow at least four weeks after plastering before tiling is commenced. This will allow the plaster to develop sufficient strength to support the weight of tiling.
Where the surface of the plaster is dusty or friable, loose material should be brushed off and a binding coat of Durabond (diluted 1 part Durabond to 5 parts water) applied over the entire surface area. Prime lightweight plastered surfaces with the same dilution.
Painted Surfaces
Excellent adhesion can be achieved on sound paintwork, but the strength of the bond is limited by the adhesion of the paint to its base. Any flaking paint must be removed. Whilst hard gloss paint is normally found to be in satisfactory condition, paints such as emulsions, limewash and distemper are not suitable and must be removed. Similarly it is not recommended that tiles are fixed to polyurethane paint.
Note: Due to the wide range of paint compositions now available, it is wise to carry out a small test area with 2 or 3 tiles. After a few days remove the tiles and check for compatibility of adhesive and paint. If there is any doubt, remove paint prior to tiling.

METHOD OF USE
1. Flat Backed Tiles
After adequate preparation spread the adhesive onto the wall to a depth of 3mm (1/8") working on an area of up to 1 sq. metre at a time. 'Comb' the adhesive horizontally using a notched trowel with 6mm (¼") square notches at 25mm (1") centres. Press the dry tiles firmly into position, sliding or twisting the tile to achieve maximum contact. Remove excess adhesive with a damp cloth. It is good practice to check that at least 75% of the tile back is in good contact with the adhesive.
Notes:
i) Use solid bed fixing technique in domestic shower areas, i.e. spread the adhesive onto the wall to a depth of 3mm (1/8") with the straight edge of the trowel. Comb the adhesive lightly with a special solid bed trowel. Press the dry tiles firmly into position in such a way as to achieve 100% solid bedding with no voids behind the tiles.
ii) Tiles must be fixed before surface skinning of adhesive occurs (up to 20 minutes open time).
2. Tiles with Studs, Frogs or Ribs
After adequate preparation spread the adhesive onto the wall to a depth of 3mm (1/8") working on an area of up to 1 sq. metre at a time. 'Comb' the adhesive horizontally using a notched trowel with 6mm (¼") square notches at 25mm (1") centres. Next, butter the adhesive over the back of each tile to fill the voids between the studs, ribs, etc. Press the buttered tile firmly into the adhesive bed until the stud meets the substrate material.
Grouting
At least 24 hours should pass to enable adhesive to dry out before grouting. With impervious substrates allow at least 5 days to enable the adhesive to completely dry out through the tile gaps before sealing with grout. In the case of domestic showers it is advisable to allow at least 10 days before grouting. After grouting allow up to 3 days before subjecting installation to service conditions.
Adhesive should be removed from tile face before it is dry using a damp cloth. For stubborn deposits moisten cloth using hot water. Tools and equipment should be cleaned in water immediately after use.
