Ceramic Wall Tile Adhesive - Waterproof

Home | Technical Datasheets | Durabond | Ceramic Wall Tile Adhesive - Waterproof
Identification
A ready mixed thin bed adhesive for fixing ceramic tiles and mosaics. Water based, waterproof, non flammable. Will fix tiles to plaster, concrete, wood, paint, existing tiles, bricks, plasterboard.

Standards
Meets the performance requirements as outlined in B.S. 5980 : 1980. Not a flexible adhesive.

Composition
A filled synthetic resin emulsion with fungicide added.

Performance
When the adhesive has fully dried it will withstand intermittent water immersion. It is entirely suitable for showers, splash backs, etc. When considering the use of Durabond Ceramic Waterproof Wall Tile Adhesive for swimming pools or similar areas where long term immersion is the norm, please contact our Technical Department.

Chemical Resistance
Resistant to petrol, oils, weak alkalis, etc. Not resistant to acids or ketone solvents.

Biological
Contains a fungicide and does not support the growth of mould.

Preparation
All surfaces must be clean, sound, dry, dust and grease free. Prime very porous surfaces with 1 part Durabond Universal PVA diluted with 5 parts water. Timber partitioning must be sealed against moisture with an oil based primer and left to dry fully.

N.B. The adhesive cannot be used as an impervious barrier to protect water sensitive backgrounds.

Application
On intermittently wetted surfaces, spread adhesive over an area of ½ square metre using a notched trowel, or the spreader supplied. Immediately bed the tiles firmly into the adhesive with a slight twisting action to ensure full area contact of tile to adhesive.

On very frequently wetted surfaces spread the adhesive as a 3mm deep continuous bed of adhesive using smooth edge of trowel or spreader. Bed tiles firmly into this, removing a few to check full contact is being obtained with no hollows where water will collect - use more adhesive if needed. Some tiles have deep lugs on the back - ensure extra adhesive is applied to cover them. Align tiles and remove excess adhesive within 20 minutes. Continue as above until the job is finished. Leave tiling at least 24 hours before grouting the joints (48 hours if tiling over non-porous surfaces).

N.B. The adhesive only becomes waterproof when fully dry.

WORKING CHARACTERISTICS

Working Time
Tiles may be placed up to 20 minutes after spreading the adhesive.

Setting Time
24 hours should be allowed for the adhesive to dry before grouting. In normal conditions full bond strength and water resistance is achieved by 28 days.

Coverage
Approximately 0.4 square metres per litre at 3mm bed. 1.2 square metres if spread by notched trowel.

Storage
1 year in unopened containers - protect from frost.

Health & Safety
Care should be taken to avoid skin or eye contact. Wear gloves, safety glasses and overalls. Wash splashes immediately with soap and water. In case of eye contact, wash with copious amounts of clean water and seek medical attention.
